An Architecture of Closeness: The Ross Family Double Farmhouse in St. Mary’s, Nova Scotia

This paper analyzes an early 20th-century double or duplex farmhouse in the St. Mary’s River valley of northeastern Nova Scotia built by brothers Thomas and George Ross. Although houses are common urban industrial contexts where economy space is required, such forms atypical across agricultural landscape. In exploring shared architecture Ross family farm, this seeks to understand their idiosyncratic architectural choice context a rapidly changing rural landscape economic underdevelopment outmigration threatened stability established social structures. While partition may seemingly create division between those living houses, case family, reproduced strengthened kinship.
